European Projects

EUROCC Italy

EUROCC Italy is a center of competence that aims to promote the use of supercomputing (HPC) and accelerate the acquisition of digital skills to increase national industrial competitiveness and exploit research and innovation opportunities through projects based on the test-before-investment paradigm and training initiatives targeting industries, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and Public Administration (PA). The national center, born out of the EuroCC project in 2020, is part of a network of 34 European centers.

As of January 1, 2023, the second phase of the project, EuroCC2, has been launched; this will run for three years and is funded by the European Commission’s EUROHPC JU action.

EUROCC Italy is structured into 7 tasks in order to meet all aspects of the industrial research and innovation process and is structured through the following activities:

  • Governance of the center and the definition of the development roadmap that will allow defining the action strategy for the next three years;
  • Training and upskilling of corporate staff, with the aim of providing a multi-level training program related to enabling technologies such as supercomputing, Artificial Intelligence, big data analytics, digital twin and cybersecurity for industries;
  • Definition and implementation of the portfolio of innovative technology services and projects dedicated to industries and Public Administration;
  • Networking among all centers of expertise at the European level and, at the national level, mapping expertise on enabling technologies proposed by the center;
  • Implementation of communication activities to maximize the center’s catchment area.

BI-REX activities within these tasks will be cross-functional.

In order to better support the innovation of the national industrial set-up, with particular reference to the Italian SMEs ecosystem, EuroCC Italy offers access to the following services:

  • Proof of Concept (PoC) realization
  • Orientation for cascade funding
  • Technology consulting
  • Data Lake Smart Repository
  • Digital Twin
  • Collaborations through the EuroCC network to support innovation
  • Training for companies and public administration

TIMES

TIMES project is co-funded by the European Union within the HORIZON-JU-SNS-2022-STREAM-B-01-02 call, pertaining to the Horizon Europe program. The proposal, submitted on 04/26/2022, has the National Interuniversity Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT) as the proposal coordinator.

The long-term vision of TIMES is to create an intelligent radio ecosystem based on THz frequencies that can function even in complex scenarios composed of a large number of heterogeneous devices that can offer performance similar to wired networks in terms of data rate (Tbps), ultra-low latency, sensing, and reliability, exceeding the capabilities of current wireless networks.
To achieve a long-term vision, TIMES combines three pillars of innovation:

  • Leveraging the ultra-wide bandwidth and sensing characteristics of THz communications;
  • Implementation of intelligent mesh networks in intelligent propagation environments;
  • Enabling integrated sensing and high-definition communications (ISAC).

BI-REX covers several roles within the project:

  • To coordinate the dissemination, communication and standardization activities of the project;
  • To implement the POCs developed within the BI-REX Pilot Line;
  • To define general use cases and key performance indicators (KPIs) within the project;
  • To identify other potential use cases that could benefit from the developed technologies.
